About Us
The Aurora Leigh Bed & Breakfast was named for three reasons. First, Aurora means dawn; I thought it was appropriate not only because this is a bed & breakfast, but because the parquet design in the foyer floor has a sunburst. Second, Leigh is my middle name. And third, the name Aurora Leigh is the title of an epic poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the Victorian-age woman who gave voice to the aspirations of a generation of English women. Browning is perhaps best known for her work The Portuguese Sonnets. However, in Aurora Leigh she wrote a ground-breaking verse novel about a Victorian woman/artist named Aurora. The name of Browning's poem sealed the deal because I felt the spirit of the Victorian age captured in Browning's book--especially in her portrayal of Aurora--reflected the spirit I wanted to capture throughout my bed and breakfast.
